Probably the best place to start learning about the history of the Internet. This document is an excerpt from the book The Whole Internet User's Guide.

The Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet

Despite its unflattering name, this document contains all sorts of useful information, including how to connect to the Internet, how to use Email, the Usenet (Newsgroups), telnet, ftp, and Gopher. It also discusses the organization, politics, and use of the Internet.

The InterNIC InfoGuide

Another large collection of Internet information: from maps of the Internet to history, and etiquette. There's information about connecting to the Internet, using different Internet services, advanced topics, and a frequently asked questions section.
